چکیده

DICK J., SKIBA U. & WILSON J. 2001. The effect of rainfall on NO and N2O emissions from Ugandan agroforest soils. Phyton (Horn, Austria) 41 (3): (73) (80). Agroforestry systems, often incorporating N-fixing trees, are widely used in tropical countries. However, the effect of such systems on the emissions of atmospheric pollutants NO and N2O is largely unknown. Here we compare the emissions from two agroforest systems, one where the tree component is the nitrogen fixing tree species {Calliandra calothyrsus) and the other where the tree component does not fix N (Grevillea robusta). The experiment simulated the first rainfall of a wet season, which has been shown to be a major source of NO and N2O emissions in tropical soils. Light (10 mm rain) and heavy rainfall (25 mm rain) was added to small repacked soil columns. Light rainfall resulted in a brief flush of NO up to 96 ug NO-N m~ h" within 1 day of wetting. Nitrous oxide emissions were negligible. In contrast heavy rainfall produced a flush in N2O emissions up to 2000 ug N2O-N m" 2 h', but no NO. Responses were at least 4 times larger for soils from the N fixing trees compared to the non-N fixing trees.

Rainfall reduction amplifies the stimulatory effect of nitrogen addition on N2O emissions from a temperate forest soil

Soil is a significant source of atmospheric N2O, and soil N2O emissions at a global scale are greatly affected by environment changes that include continuous deposition of atmospheric nitrogen and changing precipitation distribution. However, to date, field simulations of multiple factors that control the interaction between nitrogen deposition and precipitation on forest soil N2O emissions are...

Nitrous Oxide Emission and Denitrifier Abundance in Two Agricultural Soils Amended with Crop Residues and Urea in the North China Plain

The application of crop residues combined with Nitrogen (N) fertilizer has been broadly adopted in China. Crop residue amendments can provide readily available C and N, as well as other nutrients to agricultural soils, but also intensify the N fixation, further affecting N2O emissions. N2O pulses are obviously driven by rainfall, irrigation and fertilization. Fertilization before rainfall or fo...

Effects of Biochar Addition on CO2 and N2O Emissions following Fertilizer Application to a Cultivated Grassland Soil

Carbon (C) sequestration potential of biochar should be considered together with emission of greenhouse gases when applied to soils. In this study, we investigated CO2 and N2O emissions following the application of rice husk biochars to cultivated grassland soils and related gas emissions tos oil C and nitrogen (N) dynamics. Treatments included biochar addition (CHAR, NO CHAR) and amendment (CO...

Short-term drought response of N2O and CO2 emissions from mesic agricultural soils in the US Midwest

Climate change is causing the intensification of both rainfall and droughts in temperate climatic zones, which will affect soil drying and rewetting cycles and associated processes such as soil greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes. We investigated the effect of soil rewetting following a prolonged natural drought on soil emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) in an agricultural field ...

Simulation of nitrous oxide and nitric oxide emissions from tropical primary forests in the Costa Rican Atlantic Zone

Nitrous oxide (N2O) and nitric oxide (NO) are important atmospheric trace gases participating in the regulation of global climate and environment. Predictive models on the emissions of N2O and NO emissions from soil into the atmosphere are required. We modified the CENTURY model (Soil Sci. Soc. Am. J., 51 (1987) 1173) to simulate the emissions of N2O and NO from tropical primary forests in the ...
